Formula: Nadler's formula

Worth Knowing

Total blood volume scales with body size and composition, which is why the Nadler formula uses height, weight, and sex rather than weight alone — blood makes up a smaller fraction of fatty tissue than of lean tissue. As a rough anchor, adults carry about 70–75 mL of blood per kilogram of body weight, or roughly 5 liters for an average adult. The figure is used clinically to plan transfusions and interpret blood loss; this tool is for reference only.
