Density Calculator
Density from mass and volume.
kg
m³
Formula: ρ = m / V
Worth Knowing
Density is mass per unit volume, and comparing it to water's 1 gram per cubic centimeter predicts whether something floats — less dense floats, more dense sinks, regardless of size. That's why a massive steel ship floats while a small steel bolt sinks: the ship's hull encloses enough air to lower its average density below water's. Density also identifies materials, since each substance has a characteristic value, and it varies with temperature as materials expand and contract.
