The default coverage rate (10 m² per liter) is a reasonable average for a smooth, previously-painted wall with a roller — but it shifts noticeably with surface texture and paint type. Rough or porous surfaces (bare drywall, textured render, unprimed masonry) can absorb noticeably more paint per square meter than a smooth repaint, and the manufacturer's stated coverage on the tin is almost always measured under ideal, single-coat conditions. If you're painting a porous or unprimed surface, or you're not sure, it's worth checking the specific product's coverage figure and adjusting the number here rather than relying on the default.
