Pressure Calculator

Pressure from force and area.

N

Formula: P = F / A

Worth Knowing

Pressure is force spread over area, which is why the same force feels utterly different through a knife edge versus a flat hand — concentrating force onto a tiny area produces enormous pressure, the principle behind blades, nails, and stiletto heels. Conversely, spreading force over a large area lowers pressure, which is how snowshoes keep you atop soft snow. The SI unit, the pascal, is quite small, so everyday pressures are usually quoted in kilopascals or bar.

How to Use

  1. Enter Force into the first field of the Pressure Calculator.
  2. Fill in the rest: Area.
