Significant Figures Calculator
Round a number to a number of significant figures.
Worth Knowing
Significant figures track the precision a measurement actually carries, which is different from decimal places — 0.0042 has two significant figures despite four decimal places, while 4200 is ambiguous without more context. The rule in science is that a result can't be more precise than its least precise input, so reporting extra digits implies a confidence the data doesn't support. This tool rounds a value to the number of significant figures you specify.
