A sphere encloses the most volume for the least surface area of any shape, which is why bubbles, planets, and water droplets all tend toward spherical form — surface tension and gravity both minimize surface area. Its volume grows with the cube of the radius while surface area grows with the square, so large spheres have proportionally less surface relative to their bulk. That scaling explains why large animals lose heat more slowly than small ones.
