Beyond dividing floor area by tile area, the number that saves a project is the wastage allowance — typically 10%, more for diagonal layouts or intricate patterns — to cover cuts at edges, breakages, and future repairs. Running short mid-job risks a dye-lot mismatch, since a later batch of the 'same' tile can differ subtly in shade. Keeping a few spare tiles from the original lot is cheap insurance against a cracked tile years down the line.
