Variance Calculator

Population and sample variance of a data set.

Worth Knowing

Variance is the square of standard deviation — the average squared distance from the mean — and while it's less intuitive because its units are squared, it's the quantity that behaves nicely in the underlying math, which is why statistical formulas are built on it. As with standard deviation, the population form divides by n and the sample form by n−1. Squaring the deviations means variance weights large departures from the mean far more heavily than small ones.
