Area

Worth Knowing

Area conversions carry a hidden squaring that catches people out: because area is two-dimensional, converting its units means squaring the linear factor. A meter is about 3.28 feet, but a square meter is 3.28² — roughly 10.76 — square feet, not 3.28. This is why doubling a room's linear dimensions quadruples its floor area. The acre and hectare add historical flavor, the acre descending from the medieval strip a team of oxen could plough in a day.

How to Use

  1. Choose the unit you're converting from and the unit you want, from the two dropdowns above.
  2. Type a value into the input field — the converted result updates instantly.
  3. Swap the two units any time to flip the direction of the conversion.
