Energy

Worth Knowing

Energy wears many units because it appears in many fields: joules in physics, calories in nutrition, kilowatt-hours on your electricity bill, and BTUs in heating and cooling. A subtlety worth knowing is that the food 'Calorie' with a capital C is actually a kilocalorie — a thousand of the physics calories — so a 2,000-Calorie diet is 2,000 kcal. The kilowatt-hour, meanwhile, is energy, not power: it's what you get by running one kilowatt for one hour.

How to Use

  1. Choose the unit you're converting from and the unit you want, from the two dropdowns above.
  2. Type a value into the input field — the converted result updates instantly.
  3. Swap the two units any time to flip the direction of the conversion.
