The nautical mile is the odd one out in this list — instead of a historical or arbitrary length, it's defined as one minute of arc along the Earth's circumference (roughly 1,852 meters), which is why it's still the standard unit in marine and air navigation: one nautical mile of travel corresponds directly to one minute of latitude on a map. The regular mile, by contrast, descends from the Roman "mille passus" (a thousand paces) and was standardized to its current 5,280-foot length in 16th-century England for entirely different, land-survey reasons. If you're converting for navigation rather than everyday use, make sure you're picking the mile you actually mean.
