Power is the rate of using energy, not energy itself — the distinction between the two is the single most common confusion in this area. A 100-watt bulb draws power; the energy it consumes depends on how long it stays on. Horsepower survives from James Watt's marketing, when he needed to sell steam engines by comparing them to the draft horses they replaced; one horsepower is about 746 watts, the sustained output of a fairly strong horse.
