Pressure

Worth Knowing

Pressure has an unusually rich unit zoo because different fields adopted their own: pascals in science, bar and atmospheres in weather, psi in tires and plumbing, and millimeters of mercury in blood-pressure readings. One atmosphere — normal air pressure at sea level — is about 101 kilopascals, 14.7 psi, or 760 mmHg, all describing the same everyday squeeze. Tire pressures are typically 'gauge' pressure, measured above atmospheric, which is why a flat tire reads zero rather than one atmosphere.

How to Use

  1. Choose the unit you're converting from and the unit you want, from the two dropdowns above.
  2. Type a value into the input field — the converted result updates instantly.
  3. Swap the two units any time to flip the direction of the conversion.
