Worth Knowing
The Flesch Reading Ease score, developed in the 1940s, rates text from 0 to 100 — the higher the number, the easier it reads. Roughly 60–70 is plain, conversational English aimed at a general audience; below 30 is dense, academic prose. Its companion, the Flesch–Kincaid grade level, expresses the same idea as US school years. Both formulas reward shorter sentences and shorter words, which is why the fastest way to make writing clearer is to break long sentences up. Syllable counts are estimated with a standard heuristic, so treat the score as a reliable guide rather than an exact measurement.
