AMTI adds back certain deductions and preference items to regular taxable income — a full AMT calculation (Form 6251) has more adjustments than this simplified version covers.
Worth Knowing
The Alternative Minimum Tax is a parallel tax system designed to stop high earners from using deductions to pay too little. You calculate your tax both the regular way and the AMT way, and pay whichever is higher. Post-2017 changes raised the exemption sharply, so far fewer people trigger it now than a decade ago. Certain items — large state-tax deductions, incentive stock options — are the usual triggers that pull someone into AMT territory.
