This figure is most useful for a specific decision: whether taking one more class this term costs anything. Many US institutions charge full-time tuition as a flat rate across a band, commonly 12 to 18 credit hours, which means a student enrolled in 12 pays the same as one enrolled in 18. In that structure the effective cost per credit falls with every additional class, and the 13th through 18th credits are, in tuition terms, free. Running the calculation at both ends of the band shows exactly how much that is worth, and for a student who can carry the load it is one of the largest available discounts on a degree. Part-time enrolment usually works the opposite way — billed per credit with no cap, so the per-credit price is flat and the flat-rate advantage disappears. Note also that fees frequently do not scale with credits: technology, activity, health, and facility fees are often charged per term regardless of load, so the true cost per credit is higher than tuition alone suggests and falls faster as you add classes.
