The 40% default discount is deliberately conservative, because the spread between formats is much wider at the extremes. A new print textbook is the worst price available. Used copies typically run 25% to 50% below new, rentals often 50% to 70% below for a semester, and digital editions vary wildly — sometimes genuinely cheap, sometimes barely under print with an access code that expires and cannot be resold. International editions are usually far cheaper with identical content and different covers, though they are occasionally not permitted. Two structural things affect the total more than shopping around does. Publishers issue new editions on a cycle that resets the used market, so a course switching from the 8th to the 9th edition removes the cheap supply overnight, and the changes are frequently cosmetic. And many US institutions now run inclusive access or equitable access programs that bill course materials automatically as a fee, sometimes per course and sometimes as a flat per-term charge; these are usually opt-out, and opting out is often cheaper if you are willing to source books yourself. Always match the ISBN rather than the title, since a bundled edition with an access code carries a different ISBN from the plain book. Check whether that code is required for graded homework before buying used, ask whether the library holds a reserve copy, and factor in resale, which recovers a meaningful share if you sell at the start of the next term rather than the end of this one.
