About the Inflation-Adjusted Future Value Calculator

The Inflation-Adjusted Future Value Calculator gives you an instant answer from just a few inputs — amount today, annual inflation rate, years. It runs entirely in your browser, so the numbers you enter stay private and never touch a server, and the result recalculates the moment you change a value. It's free to use with no sign-up, no limits, and nothing to install.

Worth Knowing

This answers a specific question: what a fixed sum of money today will actually buy after inflation has ground away at it for some years. It is not asking what an investment will grow to. Both questions matter, and confusing them is how people conclude that cash under the mattress is safe. At 3% inflation, roughly the long-run US average, money loses about a quarter of its purchasing power in ten years and nearly half in twenty-five. The rule of 72 makes this easy to check in your head: divide 72 by the inflation rate for the years until money is worth half as much. At 3% that is 24 years; at 6% it is 12. The same rule run on an investment return tells you how long money takes to double, and the gap between the two is the whole argument for investing rather than holding cash over long horizons. The distinction everything turns on is nominal versus real. Any growth rate has to clear inflation before it counts: a holding that grows 4% in a year when prices rise 3% has gained about 1% in real terms, and that real figure is the only one telling you whether you are getting wealthier. Note too that your personal inflation rate is not the headline CPI. That index tracks a national basket, and if your spending is weighted toward rent, health care, or tuition — categories that have outpaced the average for decades — your effective rate is higher than the published one.
