Worth Knowing
Silver is quoted the same way gold is — US dollars per troy ounce (31.1034768 grams) of pure metal — but it behaves very differently as a market. Roughly half of annual silver demand is industrial rather than monetary: solar panels, electrical contacts, brazing alloys, and medical coatings. That industrial base ties silver to the manufacturing cycle in a way gold is not tied, and it is a large part of why silver is routinely two to three times as volatile as gold day to day. The gold-to-silver ratio, the number of silver ounces one gold ounce buys, is the figure traders watch; it has ranged from the teens to well over 100 across history, so any claim about a "correct" ratio is a forecast, not a fact. Silver purity is expressed as fineness out of 1000 rather than in karats. 999 is fine silver, 925 is sterling — 92.5% silver with copper making up the balance for hardness — 958 is Britannia, and 800 is a common continental European standard. The calculator scales spot by that fraction, so sterling prices out at 92.5% of the pure figure. As with gold, a dealer's retail price sits above this and their buy-back price below it, and the spread on silver is proportionally wider because the dollar value per item is small relative to the fixed costs of handling, assaying, and shipping it. Small quantities of scrap sterling in particular often fetch far less than the melt value shown here.
How to Use
- Choose the silver purity/fineness (999, 958, 925, 900, or 800).
- Choose a weight unit — gram, troy ounce, kilogram, or tola.
- View the live price for that purity and unit, in USD.
Formula
Purity-Adjusted Price
Price = (Spot Price per Troy Ounce ÷ 31.1034768) × Purity Fraction × Unit Weight in Grams
Example
Spot price $56/oz, sterling silver (92.5% pure), per gram → ($56 ÷ 31.1034768) × 0.925 ≈ $1.67/gram.
