50/30/20 Budget Calculator

Splits after-tax income into needs, wants, and savings using the 50/30/20 rule.

About the 50/30/20 Budget Calculator

The 50/30/20 Budget Calculator gives you an instant answer from just a few inputs — monthly after-tax income. It runs entirely in your browser, so the numbers you enter stay private and never touch a server, and the result recalculates the moment you change a value. It's free to use with no sign-up, no limits, and nothing to install.

Worth Knowing

The 50/30/20 rule comes from Elizabeth Warren and Amelia Warren Tyagi's book All Your Worth, and its appeal is that it replaces line-item budgeting with three buckets you can actually hold in your head. The input that matters most is the one people get wrong: it is after-tax take-home pay, the number that lands in your account, not your salary. If you have pre-tax deductions for a 401(k) or an HSA, that money is already saving, so count it inside the 20% rather than ignoring it. Sorting needs from wants is where the honest work happens. A need is something with real consequences if you stop paying it: housing, utilities, groceries, insurance, transport to work, and the minimum payment on every debt. Everything above the minimum on a debt belongs in the 20% bucket, not the 50%. Restaurant meals, streaming, and the upgraded phone plan are wants, however routine they feel. The rule strains in expensive metros, where rent alone can consume half of take-home pay before anything else is counted. If your needs run to 60% or 70%, that is information, not failure — the realistic responses are increasing income, reducing the housing line, or accepting a smaller savings share for a while. Treat the split as a target to steer toward over months rather than a pass/fail test of one paycheck, and capture any employer 401(k) match first, since that is the only part of the 20% that comes with an immediate guaranteed return.
