Flight Cost Per Mile Calculator
Effective cost per mile flown, to compare fares across different routes.
A lower cost-per-mile doesn't always mean a better deal — factor in layovers, baggage fees, and total travel time too.
About the Flight Cost Per Mile Calculator
The Flight Cost Per Mile Calculator gives you an instant answer from just a few inputs — ticket price, flight distance. It runs entirely in your browser, so the numbers you enter stay private and never touch a server, and the result recalculates the moment you change a value. It's free to use with no sign-up, no limits, and nothing to install.
Worth Knowing
Cost per mile is a comparison tool, not a verdict. Its real use is normalising fares across routes of different lengths, so you can tell whether a $400 transcontinental fare is genuinely better value than a $180 regional hop. It is also how frequent flyers evaluate award redemptions, by dividing the cash fare by the points required to get a cents-per-point figure and comparing that against what the points are worth elsewhere. Expect long-haul routes to show a lower cost per mile than short ones as a matter of structure. A large share of an airline's cost per flight is fixed regardless of distance — slots, ground handling, crew, and the fuel burned climbing to altitude — so those costs spread across more miles on a longer flight. Comparing a two-hour flight against a twelve-hour one on this metric alone will always flatter the long one. Two corrections make the figure honest. Use the actual flown distance rather than the great-circle distance between cities if the routing includes a connection, since a one-stop itinerary can add several hundred miles you experience as time rather than value. And use the total price you will really pay, including checked bags, seat selection, and any change-fee risk on a basic economy fare, because a cheap fare carrying $160 of round-trip ancillaries has a very different cost per mile than the one on the search results page.
