The nights-versus-days distinction is the one most trip budgets get wrong, and it is why daily spending here is applied to nights plus one. You book seven nights but you eat on eight days, and a week-long trip therefore carries an extra day of food, coffee, and local transport that a naive nights-based estimate simply omits. Lodging is the reverse: seven nights is seven nights. The costs that break budgets are almost never the flights and hotel you planned, because those are booked and known. They are the ones that appear at the destination — mandatory resort fees added at check-in and not shown in the search price, parking, baggage, airport transfers at both ends, tips, and the activities that only sound appealing once you are there. Travelling internationally adds currency conversion. A card charging a 3% foreign transaction fee costs a meaningful amount over a two-week trip, dynamic currency conversion at the terminal is worse and should always be declined, and ATM withdrawals in local currency usually beat airport exchange desks. Build in a contingency of 10% to 15% of the total. Not because you plan to spend it, but because a cancelled connection, a pharmacy visit, or one unplanned excursion is close to certain across a full trip, and having the buffer is the difference between an inconvenience and a bill that follows you home on a credit card.
